When your teen is struggling with their mental health, substance use, or both, it can be hard to know what kind of help they need. Some teens need more than weekly therapy. Others may need a structured program for a period of time before stepping down to a more flexible level of support.

At Portum Wellness & Recovery in Annandale, New Jersey, our adolescent levels of care help teens receive the right amount of structure, clinical support, and family involvement at the right time. We treat adolescents facing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and dual diagnosis concerns.

Treatment is not one size fits all. Your teen may begin in one program, move to another as they make progress, or need a higher level of support if symptoms become harder to manage. Our goal is to help your teen build stability, strengthen coping skills, and return to daily life with more confidence and support.

Our Programs

Understanding Levels of Care for Teens & Adolescents

A level of care describes how much support a teen receives during treatment. Some teens may do well with a lower level of outpatient support. Others may need more frequent therapy, more structure, or more clinical involvement to help them stabilize and move forward.

At Portum Wellness, our levels of care are designed to support teens while allowing them to remain connected to home, school, and family life whenever possible. Each program offers a different amount of structure, so care can be matched to your child’s needs instead of forcing your family into a one-size-fits-all model.

Adolescent Partial Care

Structured day programming for teens 13–17 needing intensive support while living at home.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Multi-day-per-week therapy that fits alongside school and daily routines.

Virtual IOP

High-quality care from home — for teens who need flexibility without losing structure.

Aftercare

Ongoing support to keep recovery on track long after the program ends.

How we determine the right program for your child

Choosing the right program should feel supportive, not overwhelming. At Portum Behavioral Health, placement is based on your teen’s current needs, goals, safety, and ability to function day to day.

During the admissions and assessment process, our team may consider:

This process is collaborative. It is not about punishment or labels. It is about helping your family find the level of care that offers enough support without creating unnecessary disruption.
