Adolescent & Young Adult

Teen Depression Treatment Center in New Jersey

If your teen is struggling with depression — and you’re not sure what to do next — you’re in the right place. Portum Wellness is a teen depression treatment center in New Jersey built for adolescents ages 13 to 18, with outpatient PHP, IOP, and Virtual IOP programs that keep your family together while your teen gets the care they need. We treat mental health and substance use together, in one program — there’s no wrong door here.

A note from our team: We work with adolescents ages 13–17 only — every program, therapy, and clinician is built around this developmental window. If your teen is also using substances — alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, or prescription drugs — that’s not a separate problem to fix first. We treat it all together. There’s no wrong door here.

Understanding matters

When depression affects your teen's life.

Depression in adolescents is more than occasional sadness — it is a serious mental health condition that can profoundly impact daily functioning, relationships, school performance, and overall quality of life.

Teen depression is not the same as adult depression, and it isn’t the same as teen moodiness. Adolescents are still developing the parts of the brain that regulate emotion, motivation, and impulse — so depression in this age group often shows up as irritability, withdrawal, or acting out rather than the quiet sadness adults associate with the word “depressed.”

It’s also not uncommon for teens struggling with depression to also start using substances — alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, or prescription drugs — as a way to cope. Both need to be treated together for recovery to last.

Our approach

Trauma-informed depression treatment, in practice.

Helps your teen notice the thought patterns that keep depression running, and practice different responses in real situations — school, home, friendships.

Teaches concrete skills for managing big emotions, distress, and conflict without shutting down or acting out. Especially useful for teens who feel things intensely.

Practical Coping Skills

Concrete tools your teen can use in real moments — school, home, social settings.

Family-Based Therapy

Parents and siblings aren’t bystanders — they’re part of the team. Adolescent depression affects the whole household, and healing does too. You’ll learn how to support your teen without losing yourself in the process.

Experiential Therapies

Art therapy, yoga, and meditation give teens a different way in — especially for those who struggle to talk about what they’re feeling.

Medication Management

When clinically appropriate, our board-certified psychiatric providers can evaluate whether medication is part of the right plan. We never treat medication as the first or only step.

Levels Of Care For Teen Depression In NJ

One of the first questions parents ask is: “Does my teen have to go away?” At Portum, no. Every program we offer is outpatient — your teen lives at home, keeps going to school (in most cases), and stays connected to the people and routines that matter.

Adolescent PHP (Partial Hospitalization)

The most intensive outpatient level — typically 5 days a week, 5–6 hours a day. Best for teens whose depression is significantly affecting daily functioning and who need daily clinical support.

Structured sessions 3–5 days a week, about 3 hours per day, usually scheduled after school. Designed so your teen can maintain school and home life while getting consistent treatment.

The same clinical program as in-person IOP, delivered through secure telehealth. A good fit for families with transportation barriers or teens who do better in their own space.

A step-down program that keeps your teen connected to clinical support and peer community after the main treatment phase ends. Aftercare is where a lot of the long-term work happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my teen needs depression treatment?

Watch for patterns that last more than two weeks: persistent low mood or irritability, withdrawal from things they used to enjoy, sleep or appetite changes, dropping grades, or increased substance use. If any of these are showing up, a free confidential assessment is a reasonable next step — not a big commitment.

PHP runs 5 days a week, about 5–6 hours a day, with a mix of group therapy, individual sessions, family work, experiential activities, and school coordination. Your teen is home in the evenings.

Usually not. PHP and IOP are designed around school schedules, and our team coordinates with your teen’s school when needed.

That’s exactly what we treat. Mental health and substance use are addressed in the same program — not on a separate track or after a waiting period. Whether your teen’s primary struggle is depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use, they’re welcome here. There’s no wrong door.

It depends on your teen’s needs and your insurance coverage. Some teens stabilize in IOP within a few weeks; others benefit from a longer course with PHP and then Aftercare. Your treatment team will recommend what’s right for your family.

Many major plans offer out-of-network benefits that cover a significant portion of treatment. Our admissions team verifies your benefits at no cost — usually within a few hours.

Sadness is a normal response to a hard situation, and it passes. Depression is a persistent shift — in mood, sleep, motivation, energy, and how your teen relates to the world — that lasts for weeks and starts affecting daily life. If you’re not sure which one you’re seeing, an assessment can help clarify.
